Your First Term
Start Making Music Together
Our group guitar programme is organised into 12-week terms. The first term gives complete beginners a structured but musical start, with rhythm, melody, chords, listening and creativity developing throughout the journey.
Each part builds on the others while introducing a new main focus.
Part 1
Foundations & First Pieces
Find your way around the guitar, develop a clear sound and begin playing simple chords and melodies with a steady pulse.
Part 2
Groove & Strumming
Build rhythmic coordination through subdivision, down-and-up movement, accents and rests, helping your playing feel more natural and musical.
Part 3
Melody & First Improvisation
Explore melodic shapes, recognise musical patterns and begin creating with a small number of notes.
Throughout the term, students experience different musical roles such as bass, chords, melody and rhythm, gradually bringing them together through complete pieces and group playing.
A Creative Relationship With Music
Learning guitar is not only about collecting techniques or reproducing music exactly as it was written. It is about developing a personal relationship with sound.
Students gradually learn to listen, respond and make musical choices, such as changing a rhythm, shaping a melody, simplifying a part or exploring a new idea.
Creativity and improvisation are introduced in small, accessible ways. They grow naturally from understanding the music, rather than being reserved for advanced players.
Over time, the guitar becomes more than an instrument to practise. It becomes a way to think, explore and express yourself through music.
Acoustic or Electric? Both.
Whether you are drawn to acoustic, folk, pop or rock guitar, the same musical foundations apply.
Throughout the term, students play different guitars and experience different strings, sounds and playing feels. This builds confidence across the instrument before gradually choosing a more acoustic or electric direction.
A Shared Lesson, A Personal Path.
The group follows a shared programme and weekly pace, designed to give beginners enough time to build strong foundations without feeling rushed.
Within that structure, exercises can be simplified, extended or explored in greater depth according to each student’s experience and progress. Faster learners may receive additional challenges, while others can focus on consolidating the foundations.
Everyone works from the same music, but not always at exactly the same level of complexity.
Where Your Guitar Journey Can Lead.
The first term is only the beginning. As students continue, they develop stronger rhythm and accompaniment, play more complete pieces, explore improvisation and become increasingly independent.
Recording, sharing and performance may also become part of the journey gradually and only when it feels right. Some students simply enjoy learning for themselves, while others later choose to collaborate, record or perform within the TSS community.

It has been shaped through more than 15 years of teaching experience into a clear weekly, monthly and term-by-term journey-designed to help students build strong foundations while staying creative, curious and connected to music.
Each teacher is carefully selected for their teaching experience, musical knowledge, creativity and genuine passion for helping others learn. They are active musicians with their own artistic voice, but they work within the same thoughtfully designed TSS programme, creating a consistent, supportive and deeply musical learning experience for every student.
Michael Clancy
Guitarist · Performer · Educator
Michael is a First-Class Honours graduate in Popular Music Performance with around 15 years of teaching experience across schools, private tuition and group settings.
Alongside teaching hundreds of students, he has built an extensive career as a session and touring guitarist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, working across rock, folk-influenced songwriting, Motown, disco and funk. His relaxed approach combines clear foundations with listening, creativity and self-expression.

Lewie began teaching through group programmes at BIMM Brighton and has since taught over 100 students, from complete beginners to advanced players.
Alongside teaching, he performs, writes and records in collaborative projects, including as guitarist and co-writer with rock band Enemy Within. Drawn to jazz, soul, R&B and hip-hop, he brings improvisation, groove and musical conversation into a relaxed, judgement-free approach that helps students develop confidence and their own creative voice.

One-off · 60-minute class · £45
The Discovery Class is a real first lesson, not a test. You will experience how we learn through listening, simple rhythms, chords, melodies and musical roles, before bringing a short piece together with the group.

After the Discovery Class
Our guitar programme runs in 12-week terms, usually beginning in late January, late April and late September. Several guitar classes run on weekday evenings, typically with start times around 5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm, depending on availability. Saturday daytime groups may also be available.
Group lessons cost £177 per month. After your Discovery Class, we will advise you on the most suitable upcoming group based on your previous experience and availability.
Each group follows a shared weekly pace, with additional support or greater depth offered where appropriate.
At the end of each term, students are invited to take part in an informal performance or community event. Participation is always optional. You are equally welcome to perform, come along to watch, or simply continue enjoying the lessons.
Would Individual Guitar Lessons Suit You Better?
Individual lessons offer a flexible, fully personalised way to learn guitar whether you are a complete beginner, returning to music or already have playing experience.
Rather than following a fixed group programme, your teacher builds a learning path around your current level, pace, musical interests and personal goals.
Lessons can focus on areas such as:

Lesson times are arranged around teacher availability and can take place on different days during the week, offering more flexibility than the fixed weekly schedule of a group term.

F.A.Q
Do I need a Guitar?
No guitar is needed for the Discovery Class, as instruments are provided. Students joining the 12-week programme will need access to a guitar for practice between lessons, and we can help you choose a suitable acoustic or electric instrument.
How much do I need to practise?
Regular practice will help you progress and remember what you explore in class. Even 10 to 20 focused minutes several times a week can make a difference. We also teach you how to practise in small, manageable steps, and you will never be judged for arriving after a busy week.
What kind of music will be learned?
We use original TSS pieces, instrumental music and carefully selected songs across styles such as pop, rock, folk, soul, funk and jazz. The exact repertoire changes with each term, and every piece is chosen to develop practical skills such as rhythm, chords, melody, listening and group playing.
Will I get personalised feedback?
Yes. With no more than four students, the teacher can give each person individual feedback and adapt the level of challenge where appropriate. The group follows a shared programme and weekly pace, but parts can be simplified, extended or explored in greater depth according to each student’s progress.
What level is required?
The programme is primarily designed for complete beginners. Some previous experience is welcome, but the first term follows a gradual foundational pace. When registering, tell us what you have already learned so we can advise whether the beginner group, a later-level group or individual lessons would suit you best.
Can I join the programme at any time?
New 12-week terms usually begin in late January, late April and late September. Discovery Classes may take place before each intake, and we will advise you on the next available starting point.
What If I already have guitar experience?
Previous experience does not automatically exclude you from the group programme. Tell us what you have learned, how long you have played and what you would like to develop, and we will advise whether the beginner term, a later group or individual lessons would suit you best.
